Course description |
Much of the world’s information is held in relational database management systems. Their size and complexity make it impractical to transfer their entire contents or even tables for analysis in R. Recent developments in the R package ecosystem and R itself allow for using data stored in SQL databases directly and with surgical precision for complex analysis, model fitting and plotting.
This course will consist of two parts, the first part will introduce the standard database query language SQL to enable users to surgically retrieve and reshape data coming from a database. The second part of the course will introduce the R integration with databases, starting with DBI, the dbplyr package for query construction and the dbplot package to directly plot from databases. We will also discuss data management systems embedded into R directly such as RSQLite or MonetDBLite and User-defined functions in data management systems with R. Dr. Hannes Mühleisen is senior researcher at the Database Architectures group at CWI, the national research institute for mathematics and computer science in the Netherlands. Hannes is also Assistant Professor at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Hannes’ research revolves around data management for statistical processing, he is the author of several related R packages, for example the MonetDBLite package. Hannes has also published several scientific papers on the topic of integrating databases with R efficiently. |
